Press Release: Police Week, Recognizing the Brave Men and Women in Blue

This National Police Week, we honor the men and women who choose to dedicate their lives to the protection of our communities. It takes true selflessness and generosity of character to serve in law enforcement, where officers risk their lives every day. It is with sincere gratitude that we thank you for your dedication to preserving the safety that so many Americans take for granted.

I would like to specifically thank my brother-in-law Scott, who is a dedicated uniformed officer in Texas, and my sister Sarah, who supports the police there in social aid. Thank you for being a role model of selflessness and bravery for my children. Both of your safety is vital to our family and also for the community you serve.

Additionally, we must take the opportunity this week to bestow special honor and gratitude to the officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives. To the families they leave behind, I pray that God gives you peace to continue through tragedy.

As Americans, we must support and defend our law enforcement officers and their families. We must ensure proper staffing levels, competitive pay, and robust training and development opportunities are available to our police forces. We must stop disparaging the police, which creates an environment of enhanced danger for them and disrespects the sacrifices they make every day to protect us.

Please consider taking time during Police Week to participate in one of the events being held in Washington. The 34thAnnual Candlelight Vigil is Friday on the National Mall and is an opportunity to come together to remember the men and women of law enforcement whose lives were taken last year. If you are unable to attend, please consider thanking the next officer you meet for serving our community with dedication and courage.
